DVB DEPLOYMENTS - THE NUMBERS TELL THE STORY
More than 200 million DVB receivers are in use around the world.
Myra Moore, who contributes the Moore Analysis section to DVB-SCENE
magazine, puts that figure into perspective with analysis on
receiver data and forecasts by platform, as well as an examination
of factors driving those sales. Among the topics to be covered:
- How do DVB receiver sales stack up against other digital TV
delivery standards?
- Where will most of the DVB growth occur?
- How will current and future business models impact DVB deployments?
Myra
Moore (President, Digital Tech Consulting) |
| 14:15 - 14:45 |
REVISITING THE DVB COOKBOOK
In the past DVB has published a "Cookbook" outlining
the basic elements of DVB transmission systems. As the number
of DVB specifications has multiplied, it's time to look again
at what's in the DVB toolbox.
- How many DVB standards are there and what are they used for?
- Have any standards been put to unexpected use?
- Are any of them still unimplemented?

Reimers (Technical University Braunschweig; Chair, DVB Technical
Module) |

MEDIA HABITS OF THE NET GENERATION
Young people growing up at the start of the new century are using
the media in ways never imagined in the past, with a dizzying
array of channels, services and choices.
- How does the Net Generation really use these media?
- Is "traditional" digital TV still of relevance to
a generation that's never known a world without the Web?
- What does this generation expect will be possible in future?

THE BROADBAND OPPORTUNITY - TAKING TV BEYOND MOVING PICTURES
The delivery of hybrid broadband/broadcast services opens up
a range of new possibilities:
- CommunityTV that combines user generated content (text, images,
videos) with classical broadcast TV
- Emergency services that provide time-critical data simultaneously
to a broadcast audience
- GeoBroadcast to support mass events with complementary location
based services

THE FUTURE OF TELEVISION - MANAGED OR UNMANAGEABLE?
In just a few years YouTube has become truly massive, showing
billions of clips to tens of millions of users; The Pirate Bay
are tracking about two million torrents and tens of millions of
users, growing with several million users every month.
- What does the phenomenal growth of services like these mean
for IPTV operators?

THE CHALLENGE OF PROTECTING INTERNET DELIVERED CONTENT
Content protection is a challenge for all sectors of the media
delivery industry, but it is content that is delivered over the
Internet that offers arguably the greatest challenge.

THE FUTURE FOR BROADCASTERS
The growth of the Internet and IP for content delivery puts broadcasters
in potentially unfamiliar territory.

but what does the future hold?
- Does DVB still have a role to play?

DVB-C2 - A VERY SURPRISING SPECIFICATION!
DVB-C2 is the latest 2nd generation delivery standard from the
DVB Project. It represents a big leap forward from DVB-C with
a range of innovative new techniques included and large gains
in expected performance.
Christoph
Schaaf (Chairman of DVB-TM-C2; Kabel Deutschland) |
| 14:40 - 15:10 |
IMPLEMENTING DVB-C2
Whilst innovation is a conerstone of the development of new DVB
technical specifications, the end goal must be a standard that
will be implemented by the industry.
- Where will be DVB-C2 be implemented first?
- What advantages and opportunities will it bring to cable operators?
- When are the first devices using DVB-C2 likely to become available?
Lorenz
Glatz (CTO, Kabel Deutschland) |

THE FUTURE FOR THE CABLE INDUSTRY
The ReDeSign Project investigates new technologies extending the
life expectancy of today’s Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) networks including
a Next Generation HFC broadband architecture. MSOs will be able
to migrate to this architecture in a most cost-effective manner.
Activities include contributing to the development and validation
of DVB-C2.
ReDeSign is an FP7 research project co-funded by the European
Commission.

Schumann (Panasonic)
Consumer Electronics manufacturers and retailers face a range
of challenges in the move to digital broadcasting. This panel
discussion, moderated by DVB chairman Phil Laven, will explore
a selection of the following issues:
- Europe is one continent, but many countries: how can the industry
cope with the differing requirements and regulations in each
market?
- How can the moves from DVB-T to T2, from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4,
from SD to HD, etc... be managed for the benefit of both the
industry and consumers?
- What features are consumers really looking for in the newest
devices?
- What comes after the move to flat-panel displays?
- Will we see a common DRM solution for Europe?
